Bolivia urges ALBA-TCP to take firm action against genocide in Gaza

Caracas, April 24, 2024.- During the 23rd Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), held in Caracas, Venezuela, the President of the Plurinational State of Bolivia, Luis Arce, urged the regional bloc to take firm and decisive action in the face of the unacceptable genocide taking place in the Gaza Strip as a result of the aggression of Israel’s occupying forces against the Palestinian people, which is “a bloody and hateful slaughter like never before seen in the recent history of mankind”.

In this regard, he proposed that the ALBA-TCP Executive Secretariat study the possibility of setting up an international brigade to support the Palestinian people, with specialized staff in disaster response and health care professionals, and then to expand its scope to education, construction, food production, and science and technology; offer scholarships at undergraduate and graduate level for Palestinian students and invite the State of Palestine to join as a full member of the Alliance.

He stated that, a few months away from the 20th anniversary of the integration mechanism, “we are facing a unique opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to the founding principles of promoting Latin Americanism through the social, economic, political and cultural development of our region”.

He also affirmed that, since its founding in 2004, the Alliance has been a beacon of hope for the peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean, promoting brotherhood, solidarity, cooperation, complementarity and reciprocity.

President Arce recalled the recent condemnation by the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) of the violent raid by the Ecuadorian police on the headquarters of the Mexican Embassy in Quito, “an unprecedented event in international law that should not be forgotten or remain in impunity”. He expressed solidarity with the Mexican people, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and Foreign Minister Alicia Bárcena.

During his speech, he also rejected the blockades and imposition of unilateral coercive measures against several countries in the region, including Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua, highlighting certain events such as the illegal seizure by the United States of an aircraft belonging to the Venezuelan company EMTRASUR and how the United States reverted Venezuela’s license to carry out oil and gas operations.

In view of these imperial measures, the Bolivian leader demanded respect for the principle of equal rights and free self-determination of peoples enshrined in the United Nations Charter; the cessation of the interference and interventionist policies of the U.S. government and the European Union towards Latin America and the Caribbean; the cessation of the imposition of blockades, embargoes and unilateral coercive measures against our peoples and other peoples of the world; the removal of Cuba from the list of State sponsors of terrorism; the cessation of U.S. financing of the military plans approved to continue the genocide against the Palestinian people, to force a military solution to the Russian-Ukrainian conflict.

Arce also raised the point that, in order to strengthen ALBA-TCP, “we must move closer to CARICOM, the African Union, the Eurasian Economic Union and BRICS”.
