ALBA-TCP REJECTS STATEMENTS BY THE OAS SECRETARY GENERAL

ALBA-TCP

The member countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) strongly reject the disgraceful verbal attack made by the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, towards the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of the United Mexican States, Marcelo Ebrard, on June 4th 2021.

The member countries of ALBA-TCP condemn this assault on a high official of one of the Hemisphere’s leading nations by a functionary of an inter-governmental organization, particularly as it is a continuing unacceptable pattern of his reckless behaviour toward selected countries.

Mr. Almagro is accountable to the Foreign Ministers of the OAS member states, Foreign Ministers and governments are not accountable to him.

We note with deep concern that the Secretary General’s actions are not only an outrageous interference in the internal affairs of States which is prohibited by the OAS Charter; it is also an egregious overreach of his authority and duties.

The ALBA-TCP member countries reaffirm their solidarity with, and support for, the Secretary of Foreign Affairs of Mexico and express their respect for Mexican institutions in the Federal and Local Elections to be held on June 6th this year.
