The member States of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP) follow with attention and concern the recent denunciations of the President of the Republic of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, regarding a possible coup d’état and assassination attempt in that sister nation.
Throughout this year, Latin America and the Caribbean have been the victim of countless destabilization attempts, through continuous attacks on the institutional framework of several countries and direct threats against democratically elected popular and political leaders.
It would be extremely naïve to believe that these events are isolated or unconnected cases, thus ALBA-TCP alerts the international community to the execution of a planned and orchestrated strategy, coordinated by factual powers, both external and internal, with the aim of disturbing the peace and prosperity of the region.
Since the first day of his administration, the oligarchy that has ruled Colombia for decades has tried to corner President Petro to prevent him from carrying out his sovereign and progressive governance project aimed at achieving the peace and human development that the Colombian people yearn for and deserve. In this context, the denunciations made by the head of the Colombian government represent a latent and imminent risk for Colombian democracy and society.
The Bolivarian Alliance will continue to follow up on these serious allegations and is confident that the leadership of President Petro and the democratic vocation of the grassroots people of Colombia will succeed in defeating any threat to the peace and stability of this sister nation.
ALBA-TCP demands respect for the sovereignty and non-interference in the internal affairs of the Latin American and Caribbean peoples and the cessation of this new wave of coordinated actions to provoke political, economic and social destabilization in several countries of Our America.
