The Member States of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America – People’s Trade Treaty (ALBA-TCP), joyfully celebrate the release of Julian Assange on Monday, June 24, 2024, after more than five years of imprisonment under inhumane conditions, as a result of a procedure contrary to International Law and the refusal to grant him the benefits to which he was entitled.
ALBA-TCP endorses the principles of justice for the decision of the High Court in London to grant him bail and allow him to return to his home country and supports the necessary negotiation to restore Assange’s violated rights.
Assange represents the truth and is, today, an example of courage in the face of the injustice of those who harassed, imprisoned and isolated him. His case is an illustration of the double standards of the U.S. government. By publicly revealing U.S. corruption, war crimes and human rights abuses in Afghanistan and Iraq, he unmasked the real perpetrators of death, cruelty, suffering and inequality in the world.
His persecution and deprivation of liberty put his physical and mental health at risk and caused irrecoverable damage to his family, but most of all it was intended as a chastisement against freedom of expression and freedom of the press.
The Bolivarian Alliance celebrates his release, joins the happiness of his family and friends and applauds the actions taken to guarantee the life and physical integrity of Julian Assange, while expressing its full solidarity.
