ALBA-TCP expresses strong denunciation regarding elections in Ecuador

After the election for the Presidency of the Republic of Ecuador last Sunday, April 13, 2025, the member countries of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA-TCP) are closely following with great concern the development of the events, especially the numerous irregularities which affected the outcome of the elections in Ecuador and the consequent allegations of fraud in that process, an unprecedented event in this country.

The elections were held under a state of exception declared 24 hours before the elections, which was in force particularly in the provinces where the Ecuadorian opposition has historically maintained popular support. The intimidating military presence at ballot tables and polling stations was evident and extended throughout the country. Some international observers and watchers reported feeling pressured by official authorities.

Amidst this repressive climate, in the days and hours prior to the election, arbitrary arrests were reported, along with the open persecution of leaders of the Ecuadorian opposition. Adding to the climate, the government hired the services of well-known U.S. mercenary, experts in military and psychological violence, in order to further intimidate the population.

International observers officially reported that the electoral event took place in conditions of inequity, with improper use of State institutions and resources, with last minute rule changes in crucial organizational aspects, which created mistrust and uncertainty in the electoral process.

Opinion polls prior to the election, as well as most of the exit polls conducted during the day, predicted a close race and foresaw a possible victory for the candidate Luisa Gonzalez from Revolución Ciudadana (Citizen’s Revolution), which surprisingly was not reflected in the official results presented, which, contrarily, seem unsustainable.

The events occurred are so serious that the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America expresses its firm denunciation to the peoples of the world and the international community regarding the events of the electoral process in Ecuador.
