In the face of the imposition of unilateral economic-tariff measures of the United States government against the people and economy of Mexico, it is pertinent to recall the historic words of the Mexican president, Benito Juarez, during the process of French interference in his country between 1862 and 1867, when he affirmed:
“The Government of the Republic will fulfill its duty to defend its independence, repel foreign aggression and accept the struggle to which it has been provoked, counting on the unanimous spirit of Mexicans and on the fact that sooner or later the cause of rights and justice will triumph”.
The U.S. government has made an arbitrary and erratic decision that harms both the Mexican and U.S. peoples by imposing a 25% tariff on products imported from Mexican territory.
In this regard, the member countries of the Bolivarian Alliance (ALBA-TCP) express their strongest solidarity with the people and government of the United Mexican States, as well as their support for Mexico’s right to development, without external interference.
Therefore, the Bolivarian Alliance recognizes the dignified and sovereign response of the Mexican government, represented by its President Claudia Sheinbaum, as well as its permanent call for dialogue, good judgment and the necessary maturity of the U.S. authorities, and hopes that this highly sensitive situation can be solved through direct negotiations, on the basis of dialogue, cooperation, mutual respect and the observance of the principle of sovereign equality between States.
