“We demand protection for Palestine!”: President Abbas called for decisive action at the UN

New York, September 26, 2024 Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued an urgent plea to the international community to provide protection for the Palestinian people.

Speaking at the 79th General Assembly of the United Nations (UN), Abbas emphasized that the immediate priority is ensuring the safety of Palestinians in the face of what he described as Israel’s attempt to “dismember” Palestinian territory. He reaffirmed his commitment to a solution that allows for the peaceful coexistence of both Palestine and Israel.

“We demand the immediate withdrawal from our land. We call on global humanitarian organizations for protection. We demand protection for the Palestinian people,” Abbas declared, visibly emotional, in front of world leaders in New York.

“We are not fighting against Israel, we cannot do so; what we are asking for is protection,” he stressed.

Abbas reiterated that the key to achieving lasting peace lies in a solution that safeguards both nations.

The Palestinian President also used his speech to express gratitude to the countries that have supported the UN resolution calling for the end of the Israeli occupation. However, he urged that this support should not remain symbolic but must translate into concrete actions to ensure the withdrawal from the occupied territories.
