New York, September 25, 2024. The second day of the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York concluded with a speech by Bolivia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Celinda Sosa, who called for strengthening multilateral institutions and upholding the human rights of all peoples across the world.
“In the face of this global crisis, we must act decisively to collectively address the world’s challenges. It is time to promote our development models, strengthen multilateral institutions, protect the planet for future generations, and ensure that justice, equity, and solidarity are the guiding principles of our actions, all while respecting international law and the United Nations Charter,” said the diplomat.
Sosa also condemned the unilateral sanctions imposed by the United States on Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua, calling for their immediate removal to ensure the well-being of the affected populations.
“Cuba should be recognized as one of the most humanitarian countries in the world. We stand with Cuba, Venezuela, and Nicaragua (…) We reject the unilateral coercive measures that violate fundamental human rights and hinder the development of many nations,” she asserted.
The Bolivian Foreign Minister also called for an immediate end to what she termed the genocide against Palestine, stating that “for decades, Palestine has suffered a prolonged conflict that has undermined regional stability.”
She added: “We call for genuine respect for human rights and an end to the genocide. Bolivia fully reiterates its support for Palestine’s right to self-determination and independence, with the 1967 borders and East Jerusalem as its capital. We hope that, in the near future, Palestine will become a fully recognized state.”
